Continuation of the dialogue with the US on the highest level keys for Hungary


Zsolt Németh, Chairman of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, held discussions at the US State Department and with the Deputy Head of the Senate Subcommittee on Europe and the Chairman of the Hungarian Congress-American Caucus in Washington, DC.

Assessing his talks, Németh told MTI on Saturday that it was vital for Hungary to maintain a high-level dialogue with the United States as the main player in world politics.

Hungary has been praised for significantly increasing its military contingents in the region, said Németh. The US negotiators also praised Hungary for safely evacuating several American citizens during the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

On the subject of Ukraine joining NATO, Németh underlined Hungary’s commitment to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the neighboring country. However, he pointed out that Hungary could only support accession on the condition that Ukraine respects minority rights, with special attention to the acquired rights of the Hungarian community in the Sub-Carpathian Mountains. “I told our US partners that Hungary was dissatisfied with the steps taken by Ukraine in this regard,” said Németh.

With regard to economic cooperation, Németh noted “spectacular results”. He said the United States is Hungary’s leading trading partner outside Europe and is the second major foreign investor to have created over 100,000 jobs in the country in the past thirty years. “Strengthening US-Hungarian economic ties and ensuring a stable business environment is in Hungary’s interest,” he said, adding that the US side had supported the Hungarian government’s economic policies.

Regarding political relations, Németh stated the Hungarian government’s aim to maintain continuous and balanced relations with Washington.
