Krispy Kreme UK is launching three vegan donuts. Can the US only get one?

On December 31st, the donut chain Krispy Kreme will launch new vegan donuts in its UK locations. The chain is updating their menu in time for Veganuary, a campaign encouraging people to be vegan in January and beyond. Typically, the Veganuary campaign leads to many new product offerings and offers at restaurants and retailers around the world, and Krispy Kreme is participating in the celebration for the second year in a row.

This year Krispy Kreme is offering its new vegan donuts in three flavors: Fudge Brownie Bliss (filled with rich chocolate and topped with pieces of brownie); Caramel Choc Delight (Belgian chocolate and caramel fillings with caramel icing and chocolate icing drizzle); and Apple Custard Crumble (apple pudding filling with cinnamon crumble).

“We are very excited to introduce this range to customers in January and to spread a little joy and are confident that it will deliver the irresistible taste for which we are known and loved, while being accessible to a wider customer network”, Louise Direito , Krispy Kreme UK and Ireland’s Head of Innovation, said in a statement.

The new donuts from Krispy Kreme are vegan certified by The Vegan Society in the UK and represent the first time Krispy Kreme has offered a vegan version of its filled donuts.

Krispy Kremes vegan donuts

US-based Krispy Kreme was founded in North Carolina in 1937 and expanded across the country in the 1990s when the Smithsonian recognized the donut chain as an American cultural icon. The historic chain was built around a secret donut recipe that founder Vernon Rudolph bought from a French chef in New Orleans.

While this recipe hasn’t changed much since its inception, Krispy Kreme has developed a vegan version of its yeast-raised donuts for its UK stores. Krispy Kreme’s first vegan donut, the Original Glazed Vegan Donut, was launched just in time for Veganuary last year and is available across the UK.

“We’re excited to expand our range of iconic, irresistibly original donuts with the launch of our first vegan offering exclusively available in the UK,” Direito said in a statement last year. “We know January is a time when many people try new lifestyles and face the challenge of creating a plant-based donut that is just as delicious as the original, without compromise.”

Vegan Donuts at Dunkin ‘

Krispy Kreme’s biggest global competitor is Dunkin ‘, who made a major update to its donut menu in Belgium last year. There, the chain presented a whopping 41 vegan donut options, from simple creations like Original Glazed, Pistachio and Cinnamon Swirl to filled varieties like Double Stuffed Strawberry, Sugared Raspberry and Cinnamon Jam. Dunkin ‘Belgium even went with imaginative creations inspired by the Cookie Monster (complete with googly eyes), candy rings (in Strawberry Red and Strawberry Ring) and a vegan donut decorated like a bee with salted pretzel antennas. For Christmas this year, Dunkin ‘Belgium is offering a cheerful vegan donut that is decorated with red and green icing.

Outside of Belgium, however, Dunkin’s vegan donut options are sparse (if not nonexistent). In the US, Dunkin ‘previously made a few plant-based menu updates, such as the Beyond Breakfast Sandwich, avocado toast, and oat milk. Last year, former CEO David Hoffman also hinted at the potential of a vegan donut. “With respect to a vegan donut, we are continuing to explore a viable vegan donut option,” Hoffman said during a shareholders meeting. “We’re looking at that closely.”

Hoffman left his post at Dunkin ‘in September to pursue other interests – including investing in vegan bacon brand Hooray Foods – and left the future of vegan donuts at Dunkin’ in the balance.
