Panama – OPINION: Justice system must be accountable to mafia…

(MENAFN Newsroom Panama)

While it is a fact that the judiciary and public administration have constitutional autonomy to establish their budget and to include it in the general state budget, the truth is that this right is inseparable from accountability. A budget of their own allows them an independence, unlike before, which has suffered illegal cuts by the Commerce and Treasury Departments and the Legislature, although the latter should be the staunch custodian of compliance with the law approved. This independence ensures the balance – checks and balances – between the powers of the state, but under the principle of accountability. And we cite the explanations the judiciary owes us regarding the arrest of the former bailiff allegedly acting as a spy for a dangerous gang whose members are the subject of a judicial investigation. How much is the judiciary permeated by these mafias? Are there more infiltrators? Why was the officer under investigation fired? Will they investigate those who provided confidential information? Questions that cannot be answered indifferently.- LA PRENSA, February 14th
