Parkview Medical Center receives 15 health care workers from the federal government

PUEBLO, Colorado (KRDO) – For the first time since the pandemic began, a Colorado hospital is receiving federal government assistance in treating COVID-19 patients. On Monday, Parkview Medical Center began training 15 health care workers from the U.S. Department of Health.

The state applied for medical staff assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The request for assistance was a direct response to deteriorating hospital capacity and low vaccination rates in Pueblo County. Parkview is currently treating 94 COVID-19 patients.

“The circumstances are bad. We experience this because we’re twenty percent less vaccinated than the state of Colorado.

A letter to Parkview employees that KRDO received shows that their hospital capacities are almost at full capacity:

With the additional staff provided by FEMA, Parkview can add 18 COVID beds and open an additional floor for COVID care.

“We have doctors, intermediate doctors, respiratory therapists, support staff, and so on,” said Morris.

Last week, Parkview officials said they had laid off 56 workers over the vaccine mandate. Officials say the layoffs affected multiple departments.

“We lost 56 employees who worked in several departments. So it’s not like we’ve lost 56 nurses in the intensive care unit. We will have an influx of traveling staff this month, especially traveling nurses. We suspect this will also contribute to our rise. “said Morris.

In a health consultation last week, the Pueblo Ministry of Health and Environment said hospitals may have to fall back on crisis standards of care in the coming months if COVID hospital stays don’t decline soon. Morris says they’re not there yet.

“What we see is a mirror of the past year 2020, which is unfortunate. Fortunately, we have not yet reached our goal and therefore trust our doctors and our management to work through these models,” she said.

FEMA health care workers will support Parkview for 14 days. However, this could extend the 28 days if the hospital still needs the additional staff.
