The US State Department reiterates that elections must be held immediately
US State Department adviser Derek Chollet has stressed that the Libyan leadership must work towards a framework for the elections without delay.
“Members of the P3+2 met in New York today and we all agree that it is necessary to support the head of UNSMILibya, Mr. Abdoulaye Bathily, in order to get the political process in Libya back on track.” , the US diplomat tweeted on Friday.
In the same vein, during his meeting in New York with Presidential Council Chairman Muhammad Menfi, US Ambassador/Envoy to Libya Richard Norland confirmed Washington’s support for a political settlement when the new UNSMIL chief takes office.
In a video recording, Norland said they noticed a lot of interest and new ideas at the ongoing meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.
“The United States is working closely with partners in the diplomatic community and with Libyan visitors to try to get the Libyan election process moving again,” Norland said.
He said all actors are aware of the importance of moving quickly to reach the elections given the current violence in Libya.
The US envoy stressed that one of the key messages his country is trying to convey is strong American support for Bathily’s efforts to lead the political process and help mediate between Libyans to try and reach an agreement that will lead to credible elections as soon as possible.
